“I’ve been a Miura dealer for sixteen years, pretty much since they came to the U.S.,” Usher said. “They know I appreciate the quality of the brand and that I protect the Miura brand.”

In his formative years, all it took was one request from a friend to have a driver built and Usher was off and running. He soon had turned out a couple dozen drivers from members of a local club. He was a walk-on member of the University of Georgia golf team and, while in Athens, he found himself working at a driving range as well as making clubs for members of his fraternity. After college, Usher started Usher Golf and developed it into a full service club building, custom fitting and repair shop. As he pursued his career as a stock broker for 21 years, his passion turned into his vocation when he retired as a broker to devote full time to his club making business. And now Usher Golf features professional grade repair and fitting equipment from Mitchell® Golf. Usher was familiar with Miura equipment before the Japanese company expanded into the United States market. With customers all over the United States, buying Miura clubheads and then sending them to Usher in Georgia to assemble, he quickly became an even bigger fan.
“I was contacted by a representative from Miura who wanted to know if I’d be interested in becoming a dealer and I quickly said yes,” Usher said. “Since I’ve been around Miura clubs, I haven’t played anything else. That’s how good they are.”
Usher knows what clubs are supposed to do. He played the game through high school, while at UGA and then a “lot of amateur events,” in his words. He’s played the game since age 15 to today. His 44 years of experience in the game, especially playing at the elite level, certainly played a part in being named a Miura Technical Advisor. There are only two of those in the United States. You won’t find sets of clubs hanging from the walls in his state-of-the-art golf shop. That’s not how he does business nor is he in that business. You will find neat rows of Miura club heads that Usher meticulously fit and build high quality sets of clubs.
“It’s an ultra high-end, custom brand and it’s the most important brand I sell in my shop,” Usher said.
Twelve years ago, Usher started a putter company which is now called Black Lab Golf. He offers one-piece milled putters from carbon steel or 303 stainless steel. The standard head weight is 350-plus grams, with up to 380 gram heads available in limited numbers.
